2004 Torciano Merlot del Veneto
Filed in archive Italian Wines on December 31, 2006
Italy won my heart again with this bottle of 2004 Torciano Merlot del Veneto. I think, other than the taste, one of the things that really has impressed me lately with Italian wines is the fact that they still have a strong, fruity flavor without the need to have a 14 or 15 percent level of alcohol. This bottle was only 12 percent. Funny how just one or two percent less can make you feeling so much better in the morning! California wine makers may want to take a trip to Italy and learn a thing or two.
Not surprising, International Wine Cellars carries this label:
The Merlot grape was first introduced into the Veneto around 1885 and its acreage has steadily increased. This thin-skinned and early ripening grape is right at home in this cool and sunny climate. Tenuta Torciano took it to the next level with this fresh red wine of ruby color. Aromas of red fruit and earth dominate the nose while the palate is lush and round with good acidic structure and a subtle, pleasing finish. Perfect to pair alongside decadent pastas with garlic and heavy sauces.
