2007 Jacob's Creek Riesling
Although I don't drink a lot of Riesling, I do enjoy it occasionally. My favorites are BEX and Urban (by St. Urbans-Hof ). Both of these are drier styles of Riesling, but still have a good bit of sweetness to them. When I brought home a bottle of 2007 Jacob's Creek Riesling, I expected it to be similar in style. No idea why I thought that. I'd never had an Australian Riesling before and if I had read the back label I would not have been so surprised by the wine's dryness. But let's start at the beginning, shall we?

The wine was a very pretty greenish yellow color and had a delicious nose - crisp Granny Smith apple with a hint of citrus. Imagine my surprise when I was expecting something sweet to hit my lips and instead a wine that reminded me of a Sauvignon Blanc crossed my palate. The wine is very citrusy with nice acid and a touch of minerality. The dominant flavors were lemon and lime. If someone had poured me a glass and didn't tell me what it was, there's no way I would have guessed Riesling (that might mean I need to venture further into the world of Rieslings - clearly I don't know much about them). The wine was well-balanced and a good value (the bottle retails for around $10. Just don't be as suprised as I was at the dryness. It's enjoyable and would pair well with salads and seafood (or really, anything you might pair with Sauvignon Blanc).
