USAToday has a wonderful article about five wine getaways from five different states: Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, New York, and North Carolina.

Their point is that you don't have to trek all the way to Napa Valley any more to enjoy a wonderful wine getaway:

America's new wave of wine lovers no longer treks just to the West Coast to vacation in the vineyards. Nestled among the Appalachian foothills, the high desert mesas west of the Rockies, the Great Lakes shores and several places in between are thriving wine communities that showcase the bounty and hospitality of the regions. USA TODAY's Jerry Shriver visited five states where well-made wines and unpretentious tasting rooms combine with food, festivals and gorgeous scenery to draw thousands of tourists.

This is a very informative and detailed article, actually, more like 6 articles in one if you include the web pages for each state. So, if you've been thinking of making a wine trip at some point, one of the wineries covered by Shriver might be close enough for a wine weekend.
