The town of Calistoga in Napa Valley has been granted federal approval to use the town's name in label wine grown there, according to The Cellarist.
After holding their breath for six years, Napa Valley winemakers can now put the name "Calistoga" on wines made from grapes grown in that historic town, federal regulators have ruled.The article gives some insight into the regulatory processes involved in naming wines and the relationship between grape types and place names in wine labling. It is interesting reading.
The decision ends a long slog through regulatory red tape, and completes a crucial piece of the valley's intricate system for labeling its wines — one that stands to make bottles from the area even more valuable.
