Amazon.com to Begin Wine Sales

Amazon.com, the online purveyor of books, apparel, and just about everything else, has announced its plans to enter the wine sales business. Beginning as early as mid-October, the online retailer will offer a selection of more than 300 wines from all over the United States to customers in 26 states. The company indicates that the selection will represent a wide cross-section of US producers, not just wineries in California, Oregon, and Washington State.
Shipping and taxes, as ever with online wine sales, will likely be an issue. Amazon says that customers of the Amazon Prime service (which carries a $79 annual fee) will get free shipping. Still, it's an intriguing development.

I hope they don´t come to Europe for many years... I run an online wine bussines, and that wouldn´t be good news... deblancoatinto

very exciting stuff -- if amazon is getting into the biz, you know it's a big market. with states relaxing shipping regulations, and the tech savvy millenials getting into wine, i think the online wine industry is poised for dramatic growth over the next few years. That is why i recently started a company to develop a mobile wine application that enables users to research, remember, and purchase wines all from their mobile phone. it's called Drync and is available on the iphone right now. we are really excited about the growing online wine buying business and want to simplify the way people search for and remember wine. let us know what you think!
