Aussie Cabernet Gets Some Attention
When we think about Australian wines, normally the first grape that comes to mind is Shiraz. The dark, rich taste of this Hardy wine has become extremely popular, especially in America. But what about good old Cabernet?

Cabernet was one of my first introductions to red wine many years ago. It is still a favorite of mine, and it looks like Australian Cabernets are finally getting some much needed attention.

From Coming out of the Australian shiraz shadow: Sure, Australia and its signature grape are nicely established as an American favorite, but it may be time to wander a bit further down the Aussie aisle.

Australian cabernet sauvignon, meanwhile, has been slowly making its way out of the shiraz shadow. And as weather turns cooler, Australian cabs can make for a welcome change, our local experts say, often at less than $20.

"Australian cabernet is just starting to get much-needed attention at Star Wines and Liquors," says John-Louis Kronfeld. "With opulent aromatics and spicy rich tannins, they provide fun drinking for those looking for a cabernet from places other than Napa and Bordeaux. From the famed Terra Rossa soils of the Connawarra come some of the most renowned and expensive cabernets from producers like Penfolds and Wolf Blass. Yet there is still value available down under."
