, an area that boasts the largest concentration of wineries east of California. From the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle:
Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars has won the most gold medals -six - including double gold at the recently held Great Lakes Wine Competition in Farmington Hills, Mich.
The Hammondsport winery, known for its Riesling, won the competition's double gold for its 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dr. Frank's was also honored for its Dry Riesling 2006, Gewurztraminer 2006, Pinot Gris 2006, Cabernet Franc 2005 and Chateau Frank Blanc de Blancs 2000.
Dr. Frank's double gold-winning 2005 Cab is described as having dark, deep black currant color, which is followed by a nose of ripe plum, fig and smoked oak with a touch of leathery notes. It is a full bodied wine that is well balanced with a good acidity and young tannins showing its aging potential. Hats off to a great New York winery!
