Foxhorn Merlot
Filed in archive Cheap Wines on December 30, 2006
The fox on the bottle caught my eye in the grocery store. I have to admit to that. Yes, I am swayed by unique and/or pretty labels.
Also, price of course is important when I'm hunting for good yet cheap vino.
This bottle of Foxhorn Vineyards California Merlot was on sale at 5.99, or I guess that was supposed to be a sale. After doing my homework late on this and buying it before I priced it on line (I'm so bad!), it looks like that pretty much an average price for what I'd call an average wine: nothing awful, but nothing to write home about or load up your wine cellar with either.
Good Spirits Wine has it for the same price, $5.99, and here's their tasting notes slash marketing blurb:
For decades, the gray fox has presided over California's premium vineyeards. Often, right before sunset, our winemaker, John Willumson, catches a glimpse of the majestic fox crisscrossing the vineyards rows her the winery. In honor of the proud fox, John selects only the best premium grapes for his Merlot. Enjoy its deep blackberry flavors and soft, smooth finish.

Great red wine that's cheap!. Love the berry taste. I'm no a foo-foo type that needs a $30 bottle of wine. This is great and you can drink it like water if you'd like cuz it's cheap!!! Berry flavor full of antioxidants. RED! Great flavor, good right before bed. Cheap, not too fancy. I tried it at Thanksgiving and it was great, when I learned the price it tasted even better.

All Merlot tastes like crap (to me)...
HOWEVER, I drink a glass with my evening meal every day because it keeps my blood sugar at a tolerable level - I am diabetic. Check with your doctor...made my blood sugar go down 150 points!! A GODSEND...and I'm not a drinker, but sure do reccomend it for this purpose. A miracle for me.

I have been buying Fox Horn for about six months from my local supermarket. At first I bought the Merlot because I love cooking with red wines, sauces are so much richer. One day I poured a glass to drink as I was cooking and was pleasantly surprised at what a good Merlot Fox Horn was. I tried the Chardonney also and was pleased. The supermarket is still charging $3.79 for the 750ml bottle. I have stocked! Thanks! Love your Vino!!!!

I can afford the very best of marketed wines. I have chosen Foxhorn, period. The flavor, smoothness, color, balance, and nuances are beyond reproach. Thank you for a tremendous product that allows me to save some HARD EARNED money. You have my blessings.

I have been drinking Foxhorn Merlot,
for a couple of years, and I love it,
even when its price went from $4.88 to
$6.59 I bought it because I liked it.
But I do not like the new screw on caps,I hope they are not permenent.

Are Foxhorn wines American or Australian, or perhaps both? For a year or so I've been buying quite decent Foxhorn Merlot, Cab and Shiraz at a local supermarket, and the label described them as "American" wines, though any further provenance was oddly unspecified. A few months ago the labels changed and the stated origin is now Australia, though bottled in California. I am confused. Can someone please enlighten me?
