From Universities to Hotel and Restaurant Management Colleges, Preparing for a Child Leaving Home

Your children have been in your home for 18 years. You've seen them through their ups and downs; you've taught them to ride a bike and drive a car. And now, they are leaving. Your child is now going to college. Hotel and restaurant management colleges, beauty schools, and large universities are all examples of the next step to adulthood. While you have known all along the day was going to come, it still doesn't keep it from being any less painful. However, there are preparations you can take to make it easier on yourself, your child, the entire family and life at home.

A great way to keep your mind off the separation during the last few months is to teach him or her anything that may help them as they live on their own. Do they know how to do laundry? Can they cook for themselves? Dad can get in the act too by conveying some basic home repair knowledge. Whats more, going through the home living basics can be a fun bonding experience for everyone.

To really ease your worries about your child being unprepared go shopping. While it may not be easy on your wallet, it is worth the piece of mind knowing your child will have groceries and other essential items. Buy a lot of non-perishable products or canned goods that will stay fresh for a long while, provide them with a first aid kit, which will always come in handy.

Lastly, it's not too late to discuss important issues like drugs and sex, as both are prevalent on college campuses. Highlight the dangers of parties and alcohol, spanning from intoxication to date rape drugs. While it's a touchy subject, your children at this point should know about the birds and the bees, especially unprotected sex. When your child is prepared, you and your family will be more at ease.
