New York Wines
by Carol Bancroft on August 27, 2007

New York is famous for its Concord grapes - more than 30,000 acres of vineyards are tended. In fact, the region where they are grown is nicknamed "The Concord Grape Belt." This area of the state is a narrow strip of land approximately 60 miles long by two to six miles wide bordered by Lake Erie. It includes Chautauqua County in New York and Erie County, Pennsylvania. Last Friday the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association released its findings on the economic impact of the grape industry in the region. It turns out that the impact is quite significant - to the tune of 659 jobs and contributed over $141 million in 2004.
From the Post-Journal:
In Chautauqua County, 584 growers produce 104,000 tons or more of grapes. Products like juices, jellies and others are processed locally and sold across the United States and exported around the world.
According to the study, the local wine industry is experiencing rapid growth and creating opportunities for increased tourism in the county. The study estimates over 20,000 people visit the region for wine-related tourism.
This is great news for New York, and particularly that region. Now they can even further promote the area to tourists and businesses.
