Ham It Up with Wine
Happy Easter!

Are you one of the millions of people who are eating ham today? If so, then you may have some problems trying to figure out which wine to eat with ham.

Personally, I never have this problem because I don't like ham. In fact, my dinner today will consist of shrimp and grilled veggies, but for those who are eating a traditional ham dinner, I found a few suggestions for you.

SamCooks.com answers the "Ham" question: Ham is a toughie because it is usually very salty. That means big reds are out as well as chardonnays and other dry whites. I'd go for a Riesling, even a Gewurztraminer. And for reds, Beaujolais or Pinot Noir.

WineIntro.com says to go for the red: For red wine lovers, Pinot Noir does very well. In France, the Pinot Noir grape is used to make Burgundy wines.

For white wine lovers, Gewurztraminer is spicy and sweetish.

You can also go with many of the rose, blush, and White Zinfandel wines on the market. Cherry wine (if you can find it) also does very well!

Wines.com explains that the wine you select depends on the way your ham is cooked: Baked hams that are served hot and have fairly sweet crusts or sauces, call for roses, in my opinion. That can mean anything from a really fruity White Zinfandel, to wines with a bit more color like Mill Creek's Cabernet Blush or Simi's Rose of Cabernet. Pedroncelli's Zinfandel Rose is a longtime favorite, as well.

If the ham has a savory sauce, more about spice than sugar, then try some of the lighter bodied Pinot Noirs. For large family gatherings value is always a consideration, and two really good value versions are Napa Ridge and The Monterey Vineyard. Selections from the Carneros or Santa Maria regions would be good choices flavorwise, or perhaps some of the Pinots of Oregon.

If we're talking cold ham, being served with potato, macaroni and spring salads, then go for well-chilled examples of the fruitiest roses and White Zins. Or go with an exception to the rule, like a floral, fruity and slightly sweet white wine such as Riesling or Gewurztraminer.
