We have about four different wine openers around here...last time I counted any way. They range from the super fancy to the super low tech and in between. While my husband likes the fancy models, I tend to still go for the same type of cork screw I used back in my waitressing days. Of course, with all the typing I do now the hands (and upper arms) ain't what they used to be, but I still find this much easier to use. Lettie Teague from Food and Wine tends to agree, but she does provide some kind of cool gadgets to consider, even for the non-techie folks like myself:

This pen thermometer actually registers the temperature of a bottle instantly -- telling the would-be drinker if it's too warm, too cold or just right.

2. Taylor's #1458/Digital Temp Wireless Indoor/Outdoor with Humidity and Remote Sensor

It's a battery-powered wireless device that can monitor both the temperature outside and inside a wine cellar.

It's a real bargain at $28.

3. ICC -- Impact Case and Container

This aluminum-sided 12-bottle case is incredibly sturdy and admittedly incredibly bulky, but it shows you're definitely serious about getting your bottles home unbroken.

Alas, it's not cheap ($400) so I'm hoping someone might want to buy it for me.
