Chumeia Vineyards in Paso Robles
actually does their wine business. They get the grapes from Argentina, do the winemaking in California, and sell the wine in Japan. In a way, they almost cover the globe with this unique wine business model. Here are some of the details from Wine Notes: Chumeia Vineyards owners see opportunity in diversity:
For a relatively small, relatively young winery, Chumeia Vineyards in Paso Robles has a complex and unique business model that features wine marketing on an international scale.
With the help of his father and business partner, winemaker Lee Nesbitt has developed an export business to Japan, an import business from Argentina and a strong domestic business focused on premium wines. It's a complicated business [...]
With both friends and family involved in the business, the Chumeia partners share in virtually all decisions, even wine blending.
"It's definitely a team effort," Nesbitt says. "I know the old saying 'never mix friends and business,' but somehow we've figured out a way to make it work."
And although their marketing and distribution strategy is an unconventional one, they seem to have made that work, too.
"We have a good balance of import/export, white label/black label, multiple price points," Nesbitt explains. "Our strategy is not to put all of our eggs in one basket."
