Large Wine Glass Bad?
Filed in archive Wine Accessories on June 7, 2006
Extra large wine glasses, like this one pictured from Blue Water Studio, have become extra fashionable in wine circles these days. Personally, in my house, glasses like these usually get broken.
I don't know what it is, but I think it's a similar syndrome to Tupperware containers. If we buy one of those, invariably none of the bottoms match none of the tops. But, if we save an old cool whip container, both pieces are never lost.
Same with wine glasses from the dollar store. They last forever in our house. So, I guess I'm not chic enough to have much of an opinion on the subject of whether large wine glasses can cause people to drink too much. But, here's my 2 cents any way. First, the larger glasses shouldn't be full. Second, what about pubs that have served large mugs of beer for years? Isn't this sort of the same issue?
From Trend for larger wine glasses is creating 'unwitting alcoholics': The trend towards drinking from huge wine glasses at home is turning some people into "unwitting" alcoholics, an addiction expert has warned.
Extra large wine measures that are poured in pubs are also adding to the growing levels of problem drinkers.
Nick Gully, the director of addiction services at the Priory Clinic in Roehampton, where numerous celebrities have been treated, said the relaxation of licensing laws had "normalised" excess drinking and would lead to more people becoming dependent on alcohol.

I don't think the size of the glass is the issue with problem drinkers. I mean, for a half full small glass you pay less than for a half full large glass, so the difference is visible in you wallet and it is a place that hurts many, if you know what i mean. Also, if you are careless enough, you can break any glass in your home, large or small as it may be.

This makes sense to me. It's all about trends, hedonism and suggestiveness. If you know your vices are controllable, you can have one of these at home, if not, don't bather.

I think it's up to every single person to decide.
