"Lite" Wine?
Filed in archive Wine News on July 17, 2007
Will the phrase "less filling, taste great" soon apply to wine, too? I know, it sounds silly, but this week a new low alcohol, low-calorie wine will be launched in the United Kingdom. Sovio is targeting people (primarily women), who find the alcohol strength of wine to be too much when they're out at a club or a bar. Sovio seeks to fill this niche market by offering consumers a wine that they claim has all the flavor, but a lot less alcohol.
From Easier:
DB Wines has developed Sovio, a wine with all the characteristics of standard wine, but with an alcohol strength of 8% abv (alcohol by volume) - meaning 40% less alcohol and almost half the calories of traditional wine at 13% abv or above.
Sovio, served in stylish single-serve screw-cap glass 200ml bottles, is available in two styles - a refreshing, zesty Blanco and a Rosado that is bursting with berry fruit flavour. Both styles are delicious, light and refreshing. Consumers can now enjoy 100% premium wine at 8% alcohol by volume, without any compromise.
It will be available in UK bars and clubs in September. For more information, you can visit the Sovio Web site.

I'm totally with you on this, Stacy. I don't understand it, myself. I am going to guess that this product in particular is targeting the bar/club crowd -- so one could drink and not get drunk. ::Shrug:: I also have to guess that these might be in Arbor Mist type style. I'm curious, though, what some of these wines that have alcohol removed taste like.

But less alcohol? Really? To a Zinfandel gal, that's a travesty. It's not that I drink to get drunk but would I buy a wine that has less alcohol on purpose? Not I. From the amount of new wines coming out under this umbrella, someone is. To each their own I suppose.
