Making Moonshine

While this is only semi-related to wine, I still thought it was interesting. This is a new book out on making moonshine. Along with recipes, it includes a lot of historical and cultural information surrounding the making of alcohol. While the press release I received indicates the book doesn't come out until June, it seems to be already available on Amazon.com.

I've had multiple different types of moonshine. A friend brought back moonshine from Honduras while I was in college. He claimed it was made from over 50 herbs and spices but it pretty much tasted like cloves and battery acid (not that I've ever had batter acid, but this tasted close). We ended up using it as punishment for loosing bets and drinking games. While living in France I was forced into drinking two different kinds of homemade booze. Both seared the lining in my esophagus. Finally, my cousin is Spanish and her father is a lawyer in rural Spain. To thank him for his work, his clients give him food, goats and of course, homemade grappa. For some reason my cousin decided to bring this, instead of an awesome bottle of Rioja or Ribera del Duero back the States with her. THEN, it was decided that we should drink this with Thanksgiving dinner. My stomach is still recovering.
