Martha Wine: It's a Good Thing

She has her own magazines, TV shows, and lines of craft supplies and houseware products. She is arguably the most well-known "domestic diva" whose harsh exterior seems to have softened a bit after her stint in the slammer. She is, of course, Martha Stewart. And next year she will be debuting her own line of wines. There are plans for a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Merlot, a Chardonnay, and possibly a Rose, all retailing for around $15. The wines will be produced and distributed by E. & J. Gallo Winery, of Modesto, Calif., and made from grapes grown primarily in Sonoma County.
From The Wall Street Journal:
As the appeal of wine expands overall in the U.S., wine producers such as Gallo and its rivals are looking to develop products that appeal to certain segments of the population. In its first year, Martha Stewart Vintage will be a limited-release wine of 15,000 cases, with retail sales concentrated in a small number of cities, such as Boston, Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C. Gallo is at first intentionally restricting distribution of the wine to cities where Ms. Stewart has her strongest fan base, people familiar with the plan say.
I really hope that Ms. Stewart is as passionate about wine as she is about folding napkins. With the dizzying array of celebrity wines on the shelves (Francis Ford Coppola, Lorraine Bracco, Mick Fleetwood, Barry Manilow, heck, even Jerry Garcia is somehow making wine from beyond the grave), I have to wonder if it's all getting a little out of hand. That's not to say that celebrities don't "make" good wine. I am a huge fan of Coppola wines. But it seems that every week I'm reading about another celebrity entering the marketplace. I don't know... I guess it's just not enough for them to enjoy wines. The need to get their names on bottles, too.
