Mixing Shiraz and Cabernet
Filed in archive Cheap Wines on April 15, 2006
I was looking for something a little different in the wine isle of the grocery store. Merlot, while I like it, I have to admit is just everywhere, especially when you are looking for a bargain on wines. So, this bottle of Lindemans Czwarra blend caught my eye - a 2004 Shiraz/Cabernet.
Before I go any further, I am going to admit that I had an uneasy feeling about my impending purchase.
The little voice inside of me was saying, "Move on...it's a blend." (I haven't been too impressed by any blends in my wine tasting career as yet.)
Did I listen to this voice? Of course not. It was a deal at $5.99 (US), and I was Merlot-ed-out. As Miles would say, "I didn't want to drink any stinkin' Merlot."
So, I bought it, and I have to say, I was not pleasantly surprised.
Now, I will confess that according to the Lindemans website, this should be paired with "beef, pasta, or pizza," and I was eating a Weight Watcher's Mexican dinner, but even that I don't think is enough to make me consider buying this bargain wine again.
The specs from Lindeman say this has a "natural acidity." To me, it was more like a combination of tart and dry, not smooth, not fruity, not pleasant. Drinkable, yes, I drank it, but it's not a wine I'd recommend or purchase (okay, unless I had a really good coupon).

Blends can be wonderful. Virtually all the great Old World wines are blended and often without the names of grapes or proportions that are written on the label. It's good to try them to experience their various styles and regional flavours. Plus if you're forced to into buying a Merlot at the last minute, you always get to turn around and say, It's a Bordeaux from St Emilion.

You make an excellent point. Like I said, nothing has impressed me when it comes to blends. However, that probably just means I need to try more of them!

Exploration....If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, taste lives in your nose and mouth. Ultimately, it's what you think about these and other spirits and fortified wines that counts to you.
