Poker And Wine-tasting

While at first glance poker and wine tasting would seem to have few similarities, it is important to look beneath the surface. Both poker and wine tasting reward those who are willing to devote time to develop expertise in these respective subjects. There are some notable similarities between poker and wine.

Variety in Poker and Wine Tasting

Wine tasting involves the sampling of a variety of different types of wine. It is not particularly meaningful for people to simply say they enjoy wine. This does not make it clear whether they prefer a full bodied red wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon, a light white wine like a Riesling or something in between.

Similarly, it does not mean that much to simply say you "play poker," although in the wake of the 21st century hold'em boom that is usually taken to mean one plays Texas hold'em. In fact, there are a various poker games, each with different properties, including Omaha, seven card stud, five card draw and lowball.

Expertise in Poker and Wine Tasting

Anyone can play poker or be involed in different online casino games, and anyone can taste wine, but not anyone can do those things well. Learning to judge wine and to distinguish between the different types of wine requires experience and knowledge about various wine tasting tools.

In the same vein, poker players must learn what different betting patterns mean and when it is appropriate to bluff or to trap. Players learn a variety of other skills from books, but for the most part through the experience of playing the game. Just as in poker, the experience of wine tasting becomes more pleasurable the more someone knows about the craft.

Enjoying Poker and Wine Tasting

Both poker and wine tasting are pleasurable activities that you don't need to take seriously, although it will be rewarding if you do. If you do just one of these things, it wouldn't hurt to try the other one. You may find you enjoy it as a casual pastime or one you want to explore in more depth.
