Resveratrol Could Treat Diabetes

Resveratrol. Is there anything it can't do? It sure seems to be the wonder compound of the century, helping with a variety of medical conditions. The latest of these is diabetes. Decanter reports that the Massachusetts-based drug company, Sirtris Pharmaceuticals has found that a reformulated version of resveratrol improved the body's ability to break down sugar:In trials Sirtris's SRT501 drug was showed that those taking resveratrol improved their score on an oral glucose tolerance test, which measures the body's ability to break down and use sugar, a fundamental problem for diabetics.
But as with any of these resveratrol studies, people should be cautioned that red wine is not the cure, nor should they set out to start drinking any more than usual. According to the spokeswoman for the study, you'd need to drink 1,000 bottles to realize the effect. However, this does pave the way for even further research. And if you already drink a glass of wine with dinner every night, perhaps there is a hidden benefit.

This ingredient, resveratrol, is possible to obtain via supplements at dosages that equal the Dr. Sinclair Harvard study in which mice lived 31% longer. In November of last year Consumer Lab, the leading independent test organisation for supplements and over-the-counter drugs tested the leading resveratrol brands. They reported that not all products contained the amount of resveratrol claimed on their labels and web sites. Life Extension brand, for example contained less than 27% of the claimed resveratrol.Conversely, Biotivia Bioforte was the best value per 100mg and second highest potency product and Biotivia Transmax was the highest potency supplement of those passing the evaluations. Be sure that you are getting what you are paying for if you decide to use this so called miracle molecule.

I can tell you from experience, that simply taking resveratrol will not control diabetes. There's a lot more to it. Resveratrol, like so many supplements, is merely an aid to help your body's own systems work more effectively. That's why they call them supplements. You still have to address the root cause of type two diabetes....

Although diabetes can damage blood vessels there is evidence that drinking red wine, a good source of Resveratrol, can limit this damage. It promising think that accelerated aging, diabetes cancer could one day treated this natural compound. As drug, resveratrol may one day used treat fresh heart attacks strokes, diabetes, as well as brain trauma.

According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of "Red Wine Grape Complex", to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product's label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand. None of the products tested were found
to have significant levels of heavy metals or other contaminants.
