Rosso To Go
Filed in archive California Wines on August 12, 2007
When I first heard that francis ford coppola had plans to introduce to the market single servings of his Rosso and Bianco wines in plastic glasses, I admit that I rolled my eyes a bit. I've seen some rather tacky single-serve packaging (sparkling wine in a can, complete with juice-box-style straw sprang to mind), and I think the Coppola wines deserve better than that. However, after seeing a product shot of the bistro-style glasses, I was relieved. They're attractive and at $4 each, priced right.
According to Conde Nast Portfolio.com:
Created by Francis Ford Coppola Presents, these reusable plastic bistro glasses are filled with cabernet sauvignon or pinot grigio and sealed with a peel-off foil top. They have been outselling screw caps and wines poured by the glass at the Giants' AT&T Park in San Francisco, where they were introduced earlier this year. They're headed for nationwide distribution in 2008.
Last month, there was a post on Grape Thinking about the increasing availability of wine bottle minis, and while the trend hasn't quite caught on in my area, I can see the appeal. However, I think products like Coppola's wine glasses are better suited for events such as ballgames and outdoor concerts than home consumption. I'm curious to see how the product sells once it is released into grocery and liquor stores.

I agree with you Stacy. I do think that this product has more of a niche market appeal. I just don't see people buying it "off the shelf" at a retailer. But it's an interesting experiment in marketing and packaging -- gotta hand it to Mr. Coppola for that!

However I am doubting its viability in markets. It's not like grabbing a Starbucks from the grocer's fridge and chugging it down in your car on the way to work. Is it?
Shudder...
