Veraison is the time with wine grapes begin to turn from green to purple. In northern California, this process usually begins in early August. This video from "Adopt-a-grape" explains Veraison and what it means in the overall process of crafting wine.

Great video post! We're expecting Veraison to happen soon on our rows at Tin Cross. It's a really exciting time and does get me thinking about how harvest is just around the corner. I never heard of that "old timer" saying, "45 days after Veraison will be the harvest.

I totally agree with Jim's thoughts on the idea. Weather is completely out of one's control. Has anyone heard about the recent storm effects in Beaujolais? (I read about it here: http://thepour.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/12/storm-damage-in-beaujolais

Nasty stuff! Mother nature can truly be unpredictable. In any case, I hope the weather stays steady and we'll be able to post soon about our own Veraison.
