Usually people are trying to figure out how to clean wine off of stained items, and not use wine to clean stained items. However, scientist Mark Daeschel writes in the Journal of Food Science that because of its acidity and alcohol, wine is an effective cleaner for use on countertops and silverware, in addition to fruit and vegetables. Now, I've made merlot-macerated peaches and port-Poached pears before, but little did I realize that I was actually helping to get rid of the nasty E Coli and staphylococcus bacteria at the same time!
