Wine Summer School

School may be out for most students, but not those who are interested in learning the grape and great about wines. More and more I see wine schools popping up all over the place.

The Wine School of Philidelphia has listed it's summer class schedule. I think some classes look like they are already filling up too. Here are just a few of the classes they are offering for vintners this summer:

The smart & fun class that over fifteen hundred people have attended since 2001, and still sells out every week! The premise of this class is to introduce the most important building blocks of wine knowledge. Come with an open mind, because we will also dispel many of those wine myths that are too often bandied about.

The Sommelier Smackdown
Featuring Jeff Bloom of Oceanaire

Oceanaire is the seafood answer to Capital Grille: A big, dramatic restaurant featuring supremely fresh fish and classic wines to pair with them. And while the Walnut Street location is Oceanaire's first in Philadelphia, it has been a favorite for years in places like Washington, D.C., San Diego, and Miami.

Tonight, Brian Freedman, Director of Wine Education, will be competing against Jeff Bloom, Assistant General Manager of Oceanaire. The wine list he manages at the restaurant runs the gamut from the classic old vintages of Bordeaux to the cult bottlings of the new world and covers everything in between. His knowledge of wine is extensive-who knows what kind of pairings he'll come up with!

And you get to play the role of both student and judge, tasting the food, sipping the wine, and voting who will reign supreme at the end of the evening. This will be a totally unique chance to learn directly from one of the region's leading wine experts in an intimate, exciting evening of competition and education.
